Rhino 3D model

This project is a sculptural representation of gravitational waves, created to commemorate their scientific discovery in 2015. The sculpture combines interpretive form with scientific data, featuring two twisting discs that symbolize the powerful forces of colliding black holes. The surfaces of the discs are engraved with machined grooves based on actual data collected by LIGO.

Marble, formed over millions of years through heat and pressure, was chosen to reflect the deep time and scale of the event. As a material shaped by geological processes, it serves as a meaningful parallel to the vastness of cosmological time and space.

By bringing together data, material, and design, the sculpture invites viewers to reflect on the significance of this discovery and its connection to the physical world.

In 2023 I participated in the Digital Stone Residency in Gramolazzo, Italy. The residency took place over the month of June, and began with the CNC machining of the design to about 80% completion. The remaining surface and form work were all done by hand over the course of 3 weeks.
